SHA Hash Generator

A hash gives a fixed-length fingerprint of a sequence of bytes. This tool encodes your text as UTF-8 and uses the browser Web Crypto API to calculate SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512. The result is lowercase hexadecimal. Use it to compare known text samples or reproduce a digest used in a development workflow. Hashing is not encryption: there is no decryption key, and a digest is not a reversible container for the original text. Different algorithms produce different digest lengths; choose the one specified by the system you are testing.

How to use this tool

Enter text, choose a SHA algorithm and generate the digest. Copy the hexadecimal result; clear removes the input and result.

What does this tool do?

Every byte matters. A trailing newline, a different letter case or a visually similar Unicode sequence can produce a different digest. The tool does not trim or normalize the input. Empty text is allowed and has a defined digest. To compare with another program, ensure both programs use UTF-8 and exactly the same line endings.

Common mistakes and limitations

SHA-256 produces 64 hexadecimal characters, SHA-384 produces 96 and SHA-512 produces 128. A digest alone does not authenticate the sender: someone who can replace both a file and its published checksum can make them agree. This text tool does not calculate file hashes, HMACs, digital signatures or password-storage hashes.

Frequently asked questions

Can this reverse a SHA digest?

No. It calculates forward digests only; it does not recover source text or search guesses.
